The first semester of graduate school has officially come to pass, and now I find myself enjoying a month-and-a-half long vacation. I passed all my classes with acceptable grades, though I would have liked them to have been higher. Right now I am not too concerned, as I don’t imagine I will be furthering my education beyond the Graduate level. I quite enjoyed my Gender & Women’s studies class, so I signed up for another one next semester. To compliment what I am learning about Muslim Family Law I also signed up for a course next semester that should give me a broad over-view of the working of the rest of the Egyptian legal system.

So far I have spent the majority of my break doing nothing. I told myself I was going to memorize like three chapters worth of Arabic words/grammar that I did not properly memorize during the last few weeks of school, final papers and all that. So far, I’ve not even opened the book once and my break is over in 10 days. I should do it though, it can only help me next semester what with my overloading on credits. I picked up the second book in the Al-Kitab series while I was visiting some friends in Sacramento, and I just happened to read the back of it today. It tells me that I get to continue to enjoy the story/relationship between Maha and Khalid. Ustathati told me that the second book did not contain the story. Clearly, that was a lie.

I picked up a new Digital camera over the break as well. My Canon Rebel, while still a good camera, is entirely too bulky for me to be lugging all over Egypt. I think that if I have a camera that I can put in my pocket, I’ll be more apt to bring it along with me. I don’t want to get done with my Masters and have no pictures to remember Egypt with! That would be a sad, sad day.

This website continues to not get used. This is also a sad thing. Mostly all the stuff that I do is behind-the-scenes, and only involves keeping the software up to date. Maybe trying to update this on a daily basis will be my New Year’s Resolution? Probably not. I’m not a pessimist, just a realist. But I do have a lot more online stuff that I will have to do this year because of the Graduate Students’ Association, so perhaps I can manage to work this in? Hopefully.

Speaking of that illustrious organization of ours, check it out! http://www.aucgsa.com.

Yours,
Scott

Absolutely nothing new has happened. Oh no wait, that’s a lie. School started on the 6th of September, and lasted for about two weeks. It was then prematurely ended because the Egyptian government feared an outbreak of the H1N1 virus. Apparently they worried that those faithful returning from Hajj in the Kingdom would return immediately to their respective vocations and spread the flu around. However dubious this possibility may have been, it was nevertheless that I was forced into a two week vacation. Welcome to Egypt!

So school has started again, and I am beginning to question my basic understanding of myself. Case in point: my Arabic class is four days a week at 8:30am. That means I have to get up at 7am 4 days a week. Why did I not learn my lesson in during my undergraduate career? I keep saying I’m going to pick a later class next semester, but Lord knows I’’ll probably end up signing myself up for the early class again. So goes the plight of Scott.

So yeah, that’s all for now.

Dear Friends! I have safely arrived in the great Arabic Republic of Egypt. Actually, I safely arrived over a week ago, and have just this instant found an opportune moment to share with you my brief thoughts.

My original flight took off from Sacramento and was about three hours long, wherein I arrived in Minnesota. Ate McDonalds, then a plane ride (where they thought we were going to sleep?) to Amsterdam. It was like 9:30 when we finally took off because they couldn’t find one of the passengers. We get in the air they serve us drinks and crackers. Then like 20 minutes later they’re serving us dinner. Thankfully each seat had its own entertainment center where you could watch TV shows of recently in theaters movies. I watched The Watchmen and The Simpsons. I tried to sleep for a few hours, then it was apparently breakfast time.

I landed in Amsterdam purchased some Euros’ (*shakes a fist*), purchased a train ticket, and headed towards Den Haag Centraal. My entire goal in daring to step foot outside of the Schipol Airport in Amsterdam was to see The Peace Palace, which finds itself in the area known as The Haag. Now, I arrived at Den Haag Centraal and asked the very kind persons there which tram would take me to The Peace Palace. They spoke fluent English, but I confirmed their directions nevertheless! I get on the tram in question, ride it for about two stops and then decide to ask the lady next to me if she would tell me when I should get off if I want to see The Peace Palace. The kind woman informs me that there are two trams bearing the same number, and that they each go two different directions. I was not on the proper tram. I cursed inwardly, and got off at the next stop. Thankfully I was able to just follow the train tracks back the station. I got back to the station, and hopped the next train back to Schipol. There ended my adventures for The Haag. Until next time, sweet, sweet International Justice!

I arrived in Cairo, tried to cram through some mess they had going on. Apparently we all needed to fill out a card letting them know that I was carrying no known diseases. Much to my dismay, when I finally did get across to my baggage, the person who was supposed to pick me up was not there. Sadly I had to pay like $10 more than I should have needed too, but alas it was like 3:30am and I didn’t care. I just wanted to sleep. I spent a week in Hotel Longchamp’s. It’s a very lovely hotel that is on the Island of Zamalek on Ismael-Mohammad Street.

I found a flat mate and a flat via Cairo Scholars, and I am now living in an apartment in Al-Rehab which is in New Cairo. Its a very nice community. There are children … everywhere outside our apartment building. It’s Ramadan, so I’m assuming they get to stay up late (they’re there until 1am sometimes). Or maybe that hour isn’t late for them I do not know enough about the culture to say one way or the other.

Anyway, writing this blog has reminded me that I have failed to register my new residence with the local Police Station. I’ll have to do that monday.

Goodbye, friends

Yeah, it has been almost a month since I last bothered to update my blog. A lot has happened, much of it mundane. I received an email from the American University in Beirut letting me know that I had been accepted to the Political Studies program. *sigh*. Right now I am waiting on the acceptance package to arrive in the mail. Their email said to call them if it had not showed up by the 1st of July (today being the 5th). It hasn’t shown up, but I think they still have my physical address as being in Sacramento so I will give it a couple of more days to show up before I begin to worry.

Two weeks ago I was in Seattle visiting family. It was nice, I had not seen them all since they came down to Sacramento for my college graduation. While I was there, I got to take a day trip to Port Angeles, Forks, La Push and all of the surrounding area. It was amazing. Lots of photos will undoubtedly follow at some later point.

For now I continue to study for catechism, as well as worry about the future studies.

Much more later, I promise.

So today I got the email from AUC with instructions on where to take the Online Arabic Placement examination. I clicked on it and then clicked on the link that would show me a ’sample text’. All I have to say, is …oh my. I am way worse of than I originally thought I was. I took three semesters of Arabic, but its been almost a full year since I have done any studying.

Maybe this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise. If I do poorly I won’t be able to complete my degree in the two year time frame, unless I take some intensive Arabic courses. I am not opposed to such a thing, and I think that if I start from the beginning I will be able to pick it up a lot easier. Now that I am a graduate student, I will not be working. I spent at least 40 hours a week while I was in my undergraduate career at Sacramento State, and I know I would have done better in all of my courses if I had not worked and spent more time studying. So, Insha’allah, I will do better this time.

I believe that I am still on course ( I make it sound like a race) to be baptized this August. Hopefully it will be on August 15th, which is the Feast Day of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother. Being baptized on that day was not my idea, it was my Priest…and he only mentioned it in passing. But somehow, it seems right.

I’ve much more to say, mostly about my upcoming trip to seattle, but I have to go now. So, until next time…bye!

Yours,
Scott

Today I spent a bit of time installing a new Plugin for my Blog. The Catholic Reference Extension, created by the genious over at Catholicism Computes, is a plugin that allows the author of a blog to reference both the Holy Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I initially had some issues getting the extension to work, however I believe it to be some type of operator error. I installed a package that did not contain the texts for the scriptures/ccc and tried to installed them afterwords. That did not work, so when I uninstalled and then reinstalled with a complete package from the Catholicism Computes website it worked just dandy.

A basic example of how this little ditty goes, is to follow. Say, for instance, that I wanted to remind you of how much God truley loves you. I could cite scripture and tell you to look up John 3:16. Now, you would have to find your bible (it should be on your night stand!) find John Chapter 3 verse 16 and read.

But now, all you have to do is hover over the citation to John 3:16 that I gave you, and BAM! You’ve found God’s love.

It also works with the Catechism, as previously stated. Here’s reference to Apostolic Sucession, found in CCC 77.

In other news, I continue to fiddle around with this website on a daily basis. Now that I am no longer working (The Up & Up!) I have a lot of free time. Still have to get school stuff in order…which reminds me, I have a check to mail off and a Camcorder to order.

Well friends, many things have changed. Friday was my last day working for Target Corporation! There are myriad reasons why I no longer work there, but the most important of all is that it no-longer felt like a fun place to work. I’ll be spending the remainder of my summer with my family, amongst other things. Target is not a terrible place to work, and I did have some fun times during my three years…it just wasn’t the same for me after I left Lincoln and came back to a store I really didn’t know so much. With my departure, the Reign of the worlds Three Best GSTL’s has come to an end!

Now that I have much more free time, maybe I will actually get to work on this website with some real gusto. Not sure how that is all going to pan-out for me in th end, but I will give it a try. There are some minor changes I want to make to the navigation. For instance, the photo gallery section…when I create a new Album in the gallery, I do not want it to show that Album in the main navigation of the site. Right now, it shows up as a sub-page to my navigation and I don’t like it. Death to sub-pages! Also, I would not mind taking some more pictures to add to my rotating main header. Have you noticed that it rotates yet? I have!

Not sure if I mentioned this in a previous post before, but I finally spoke to my Priest about getting baptized. It only took four years of discernment. But whatever. I meet with him every two weeks (tomorrow will only be the second time that I meet with him) to go over some literature about the Catholic Church. So far, I have gone through the “Inquiry” pamphlet that he gave me, and it really only had some basic information in it for me. Maybe it wouldn’t seem so basic if I wasn’t the type of person who wants to know everything. Also, Wikipedia traps me in its never ending cycle of clickable links. Father Clooney also gave me a copy of the Handbook for Today’s Catholic. It is an interesting read, I knew most of the information in it but it also gives a little bit of background as to why we believe such things. It’s always good to know why we believe something, rather than blind faith. Unless it’s a Dogma. Then you just need to sit down and believe! No really, you should know why.

I think that is all I have for now. Still waiting on Egypt. I emailed both the Financial Aid and Housing departments and I’m waiting to hear back from them. I should leave the middle of August for Cairo so I can get settled in before school starts. My grandmother told me she wants to come visit while I’m there. That will be interesting…though she has been to Africa before. Curing Polio, or something like that.

See you around the bend,

Yours,
